One question that is often asked is "can a community site make any money?" Despite the demise of the 'dot com' fever the answer is almost certainly yes. Site traffic, especially from a known geographic area has a value to sponsors and advertisers operating within that area.
Advertising and Sponsorship System
Portal Constructor has tools to set up and manage both advertising and sponsorship. The administrator can set up the advert to appear across the entire site or be restricted to areas relevant to the product or service on offer. For example a local sports centre could have their advert display only on Weblets that has been allocated to the sports group. An advertiser is able to log on with a password and view their advertisement, the hits it has received and other useful information.
In addition the administrator can set up a sponsor's logo to appear on various areas of the site, and if a number of sponsors are supporting the site their logos can be rotated. In this context a sponsor does not have to be a commercial organisation, it might an internal department wishing to attract attention, "Apply for your new recycling containers" for example.
Custom Weblets
Another potential course of income for a community site is the selling of custom Weblets. As Weblets can be produced in a 'look and feel' different from the main site it is possible to produce custom Weblets especially for outside organisations that are appropriate to the overall site.
